Compatibility

The WD Elements and the WD My Passport are NTFS formatted (New Technology Files System), so they are formatted for Windows 7, 8, 10 and Windows Vista. You can use them with Windows XP, but it has to be Windows XP 64-bit. For other operating systems, the hard drives can easily be formatted.

Plug and Play

It’s very simple to use the WD Elements and the WD My Passport. All you need to do is plug the hard drives into your device with the included USB cable. Data is transferred via a 3.0 USB connection. They are also compatible with USB 2.0.

Warranty

There is a 2-year limited worldwide warranty with the WD Elements and the WD My Passport. The WD Elements series has a 3-year limited warranty in China.

From 500GB to 1TB, the hard drive is 4.35 x 3.23 x 0.59 inches and weighs 4.64 ounces. The hard drives that are 1TB to 4TB are 4.4 x 3.2 x 0.82 inches and weigh 4.8 ounces. This range comes in black.

WD My Passport

The 1TB hard drive is 4.33 x 3.21 x 0.64 inches and weighs 5.92 ounces. The 2TB to 4TB drives are similar in size at 4.33 x 3.21 x 0.85 inches but weighs more at 8.64 ounces. You can get them in black, black and grey, red, white, blue, orange or yellow.

If you aren’t planning to use the hard drive for any valuable files or information, you can save yourself quite a bit and go for the WD Elements. However, we found that the extra cost of the WD My Passport was worth it for the software, auto backup and security.
